Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise in her early years. The actress worked as a late night nurse in order to give her aunt time that she required in the working day to pursue her passion for theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered that art can be a powerful tool to promote social activism. When she was still studying, DuVernay became interested in producing to the broadcast media. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay determined to make a move in publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999.
